Come with me to the Sea
Doris Anne Holman of midcoast Maine has written a book for children about the ocean. It is truly a Maine book, featuring her vibrant watercolors. It is written with a verse that asks you to "Come and take a walk with me. Along the beaches of the sea" Most of the paintings were started on location at either Reid State Park or Popham Beach State Park. She has a picture of Bay Point. She has a seal that is painted in her washy watercolors. A seagull looks out from one page while a piping plover hides in the weeds on another. Anyone who loves Maine will love this book. It is really for anyone who likes to walk a beach, hear the surf and watch the moods of the ocean. She reads her books at schools. When she reads, "What kind of a day would you like it to be? The day that we spend down by the sea?" the children alway say "sunny." "That makes me laugh," says Doris Anne, because she was expecting them to say quiet, windy or high tide or low tide. |
